[He pauses before he nods to himself, not that Jesper could see it. He's still quiet.]

Yeah. Yeah, we're okay.

Right. Good--[And is that relief you hear? Absolutely. Clear, audible relief.

And it hangs there for a moment. Both because it's settling in and because Jesper isn't quite sure what else to say. If there is more to say.]

Don't go getting into trouble with Noah, all right? [When in doubt, deflect, deflect, deflect.] If he's willing to take on dragon taming, who knows what else you'd end up getting yourself into.

[She felt some sort of way about the way she'd reacted to what she'd seen in the horror house with him. She had perfectly legitimate reasons for feeling the way she did, when she was presented with what looked very much like some sort of witchcraft, but it didn't make it okay to hurt that kind of stuff at a kid.

She'd done it enough to her younger sister through the years, she's supposed to be becoming a better person.]

[Honestly, he was kind of hoping to hear from Willa. After the mess of the horror house, he had kept his distance, kept his head down. He had thought, rather naively, that his abilities might be looked at differently here. While that might be true of some people here, it obviously wasn't for all of them.

He might have felt a bit guilty.]

[He could leave it there. Curt, but polite enough. It's only a moment later when he adds:] How are you?

Listen. Sorry isn't something I'm good at. I'm sort of on a massive learning curve with it. But I am. For how I treated you the other day.

Lucky you, I'm used to 'sorry' not being part of someone's vocabulary.

I forgot that powers like that aren't something people see often.

Is that so? Well, then I will count my stars, since they've brought me so much luck. I'm not. It wasn't okay. What you saw... the weird puppet scene? I knew nothing about myself after that. I ended up in a cult because of it.

[Not information she hands over lightly, mind you. But there's a purpose to this explanation. She isn't handing it to him for the shock of it, but to explain why her reaction was so deep, so visceral.]

[Unlike some people Jesper knows, he doesn't hold grudges for every slight. And this one--as he said, he got it.]

Promise? Yeah. My life has been... a lot of me being led by men, in all the worst ways.

[There's a part of her that she thinks will always be Daddy's Good Little Soldier, who thinks he hung the moon, but she's older now. She can see things she didn't always, in a different light now. She knows Ward was an abusive drunk, and that they all deserved more, and better, than that.]

[And certainly a better lot of men if this is where all of that history led. He doesn't know the whole of it, but the things he saw with her, the way she reacted? He knew enough.]

Whenever you feel up to it, I can show you the trick with making bullets. [A peace offering. A way forward.]
